Tips for Going Abroad
You are going to spend even more money than you anticipate spending so be aware of this and take it into consideration when saving up before going abroad! Every penny counts.
Many credit cards are not accepted in certain stores and restaurants so definitely have a Mastercard or Visa since these are universal. Credit Cards that don’t have international transactions fees include Discover, Chase, and American Express, but often these are the ones that aren’t accepted everywhere.
Mosquitos are a major issue in certain countries. Italy for example has mosquitos year round so bring bug spray!
Try to learn key phrases and words of the native language of your country of residence before going abroad, so that when you first arrive you are able to communicate to some degree with the local people you encounter on a daily basis.
Try and step outside of your comfort zone so that you gain more of a cultural experience. Learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Develop a daily routine so that you don’t forget to dedicate time to your studies.
While abroad, don’t focus all your attention on social media. Enjoy the moment.
Don’t bring extremely valuable items abroad. Everyone loses phones, wallets, credit cards, cameras, etc. If it happens to you, don’t panic, they are just material objects so they are all replaceable. As long as you have your safety and health.
Be mindful of the climate and weather of your country of stay while packing. This means don’t forget your raincoats and fuzzy socks! however, don’t bring too much clothing because you WILL end up shopping a lot. Europe has very trendy and cute clothing you won’t find back home.
Journal! Write down funny memories, good places to eat, your favorite cities and countries, what you miss from home, what you’ve learned. Everything. Write it all down.
Lastly, know that it is going to be the greatest four months of your life so forget about spending or gaining, but remember to live it up. You only get to do it once in your life. Have fun!!
