This Is Us Recap: Season 2, Episode 4

It turns out, the Pearson family is gaining another bundle of joy! The final moments of the episode reveal Kate getting an ultra sound, which is a bit of a twist. The entire episode Kate is working out like crazy, trying to fit into a dress for a signing gig. Kate even goes to a drug store to purchase weight loss drugs, which makes her pregnancy a total surprise. A new life is a positive thing for Kate and I hope America is just as excited for her as I am!

Okay, we need to talk about Rebecca’s mother…Rebecca’s mother, Janet, stays at the Pearson house when all three kids are sick with the chicken pox. We learn that Janet is a flat out racist, as she makes it insanely obvious when she interacts with Randall. Her sly comments and actions such as, giving Randall a basketball because she thought he’d be a “natural” at it and questioning how he was the only one to get into private school breaks my heart for little Randall. Rebecca lays into Janet and rips her apart for being racist towards her grandson (claps for Rebecca). Sadly, Randall hears the whole argument and now Rebecca and Jack are left with explaining to Randall what racism is.

Just when we thought Deja was accepting the Pearsons as her new family, the Pearson’s foster child situation toke a turn for the worse. During a family outing to the bowling ally, Deja shoved another girl, as the girl made fun of the way Deja’s hair smelled. Randall had to step in and play fighter for Deja (hmm an aggressive side of Randall we have never seen before). Afterwards, Deja agrees for Beth to wash and braid her hair, where they have somewhat of a bonding moment (yay!). However, Beth tells Randall about the bonding moment she had with Deja. To show rebellion, Deja cuts off all her braids, which made her hair look like it was trimmed by a weedwacker. Poor Beth is left with a shocking and disappointed look on her face.
